Drupal community site

Hi all.I am very new to drupal.I try to build a community site for the athletics department of my school.Well i am a little confused about where to start.I bought the drupalfun book but it is a little advanced for me as i see it.Anyone has any suggestions?

Thanks for your answer.I managed to install a basic site following your instructions.The only problem i had was with the site email when drupal report me that it can't send emails.Is this a problem?Now my goal is to build a prototype site with user profiles in order to demonstrate it to the trainers.So where i must go from now on?
