as the book says you can replace the img sources with your own icons to get them working. also if you're looking for the rounded corners design, its a Panels feature that you can enable on every "Pane" you add just clicking on "Region Style" or something like that and selection Rounded Corners.

You can set some css strings too to make it fit your layout.

are you using the drupalfun package? or is a custom made one? because drupalfun package has most of the tools and modules to make that layout possible. You have to use panels for your home page, the rest seems like css adjusts and graphical design, maybe you should look for an additional theme at drupal.org wich fits better for that layout.
