Panels 3

Question:

I love the book (very much worth the money!) a really simple step by step guide to getting a website like Drupalfun. My only problem is i installed panels 3 to be a bit more future proof but cannot get the panel-page (Delegator module) equivalent working. and tips or ideas?

Responses

1. I had the same problem.

I had the same problem. Other modules are incompatible with panel3

2. i'm not sure if there will be

i'm not sure if there will be a quick tut on Panels 3 but let's hope, it seems they are dumping panels 2 in favour of 3 and only supporting that module from now on (correct me if i'm mistaken)

I need help with this too. How do you go about creating the panel page in section 4.3.1 with the Panels 3 interface? I'm lost.

5. I don't think panels 3 is

I don't think panels 3 is ready for production yet.

6. Panels 2 is Dead

..nor is the Panels 2 alpha that you use. If you look at the Panels project page, Panels 2 is DOA with no promise of an upgrade to Panels 3 (where all the future effort will be). If I had to pick from alpha's, I'd go with Panels 3. You should put some effort into helping us with this.

???

Well, panels 3 alpha 3 came out yesterday.

However, even panels 3 still does not have an upgrade path, which means, you have to start from scratch on each release. Ok, like charos says, it's only used for displaying, so it goes quickly.

If I find some time I might take a look at the new release on a testing site.

8. Upgrade Path

On the Panels project page at drupal.org, I noticed that it now says, "There is currently no upgrade path but there will be one." Hopefully they mean from Panels2 to Panels3..

Edit: Looks like it. http://drupal.org/node/400932

So, I don't think starting with Panels2 will doom anybody, it's just going to be a wait until the beta comes out for that promised upgrade path... Still, I choose to start with Panels3 since I don't mind that I might find a bug or two (the sites I'm using it on are fairly small). Might as well get to know the new set up.

9. Panels 2 is still dominant

Panels 3 might be the only version that gets developed (with a lot of goodies coming out) but most modules that integrate with Panels have the expected behaviour with Panels 2. So the best thing to do is go with Panels 2 until maturity. Anyhow you won't lose anything since the whole built-up is done in Content Profile Module. You can rebuild your panel later on without losing any data. Don't be hasty! Take for example Advanced Profile Kit, that currently is in Dev state and yet although warned, many people use it on production sites. When the next release will come in with many features , will have no upgrade path and people who were hasty will hit their head on the wall. One thing I learned about Drupal the last two months I got into it...you've got to be patient!!

10. Panels modules

Hi

I've been struggling, trying to use panels, all day long

Can someone fill me in, I need a list of the exact name of the modules to install so I can complete the steps listed in chapter 4 of Dorien's excellent book

One thing I would suggest is that the book be updated with a list of modules that should be downloaded and installed.

What would be even better is if there were an FTP or HTTP site where you can go to download the modules used in the book. If that were so, a reader could know that they are getting all the right things to cook with, and to then to complete everything beautifully without being anxious that you have incompatible modules. After you get the whole thing working it is a trivial task to upgrade and install new or alternate features.

Here is the list of modules I've installed but I've struck a barrier and I'm finding it hard to get further than this. Can someone give me a hint about what to do here?

installed on Drupal 6.10:

dhtml_menu-6.x-3.4.tar.gz

tagadelic-6.x-1.2.tar.gz

captcha-6.x-2.0-beta2.tar.gz

recaptcha-6.x-1.x-dev.tar.gz

token-6.x-1.11.tar.gz

content_profile-6.x-1.0-beta3.tar.gz

cck-6.x-2.2.tar.gz

cmf-6.x-1.6.tar.gz

nodeadmin-6.x-1.0-beta1.tar.gz

contentblocker-5.x-1.0.tar.gz

imagefield-6.x-3.0-rc1.tar.gz

imageapi-6.x-1.5.tar.gz

filefield-6.x-3.0-rc1.tar.gz

pathauto-6.x-1.1.tar.gz

views-6.x-2.3.tar.gz

ctools-6.x-1.0-alpha3.tar.gz

panels-6.x-3.0-alpha3.tar.gz

Dorien, I will happily pay to get a clean install that I can play with. It is all fine to go through the book but the concern I have is that my modules are incompatible and I need to know that things will happily live together.

11. my small advice

contentblocker-5.x-1.0.tar.gz : What were you planning to do with that!! This is for Drupal 5!

ctools-6.x-1.0-alpha3.tar.gz & panels-6.x-3.0-alpha3.tar.gz : Remove those and use 6.x-2.0-alpha3 for Panels. This will solve all your problems and desperation! The only incompatible module is Panels , so don't fret about incompatibility issues!

12. Much appreciated

Thanks for this charos

I am new to Drupal but I've been working as a programmer for 15 years - java, sql, jsp

I like what Drupal can do but it is difficult to learn the complexities of it in a short span of time. I only started on Drupal yesterday!

13. The first month is the

The first month is the toughest! There are many times that you want to hit your head to the wall or think that you're brain gets 100% cpu usage and is about to get a BSOD! At least that happened to me on February!I have no programming skills (studying Architecture) and the experience of having a small server at home just saved me few weeks of how things work. I think with your programming skills the steep learning curve of Drupal will become a line!

14. Used Panels 3, works fine for me.

I followed what Tom wrote in this thread: http://drupalfun.com/question/problems-431-creating-panel-page#comment-175

Go to administer >> build >> pages (admin/build/pages). You will see a System Pages list. The top one should be 'Node view'. This is where we must make our panel.

I'll just quote Tom's post for the rest:

"This step will be different though. The node/% page is already created for you in P3 as Node View and uses the argument %node by default.

So next to Node View, just click on Operations -> Task Handlers

Choose Panel and then "Add New Handler"

Then on the next screen (Selection Criteria) choose "select by node type" and add that and set the node type ot Profile.

And then it's substantially the same as in Dorien's manual."

They really changed stuff around for Panels3, but I didn't have any problems once I knew where to go.

15. Wait for the Beta.

I just wanted to say that I just installed the latest 6.x-3.x-dev and it's significantly different than the 6.x-3.0-alpha4. A bunch of Panels stuff is now part of CTools and what's still part of Panels is moved/changed quite a lot.

Although I don't mind playing around with the recent devs of these two modules, I would not recommend anyone using Panels3 on a production site. Wait until the Beta or you will indeed have to remake your panels, as a few people previously mentioned. Not a HUGE deal since they don't take that long to rebuild but still an issue for most.

Safest bet would still be to stick with Panels2 and wait for the upgrade path to Panels3 that the module maintainer is going to add. Yeah, I know I'm just repeating the obvious again, but I didn't want my last message to encourage people to use Panels3 without knowing the risks.

16. Panels

I use panels on my site in a limited area now and find that it works quite well and easy to update. You can see it in action. http://www.ohbytheway.biz/job-feeds.

The only thing that I do not like about it now is that it does not have a dynamic view. You have to open the page up again to see the changes.

17. I've posted some conversion

I've posted some conversion notes here: http://drupalfun.com/content/converting-panels-3

18. What is the new path name

What is the new path name that you use for panels 3?

19. Panels 3

Panels 3 when installed gives me an error in mysql database my site stops functioning. I have to delete Panel 3 module and CTools and re-install Panels 2.0 to get the system working again.

Anyone else having this problem?

20. Panels 3 Issue

I thought the same that aI had a bad upload, as I also use FileZilla, but the re-install gave me the same problem.

I am now back on Panels 2 and every things seems to work well.

Glad to see that I am not the only one having this problem.

Thanks for the feedback and check out my new site that I am working on, drupalus.com It is in the implementation stage, but decided to go live, as I develop.

21. Please find conversion guide
